Donating the Model Context Protocol and Establishing the Agentic AI Foundation

Overview

Anthropic announced on December 9, 2025, that it is donating the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Linux Foundation's newly established Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). This action represents a significant step toward ensuring MCP remains an open, vendor-neutral standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.

The Model Context Protocol

Adoption Achievements

Since its introduction one year prior, MCP has experienced substantial growth across the AI ecosystem:

  • Ecosystem reach: Over 10,000 active public MCP servers now exist, spanning developer tools to Fortune 500 implementations
  • Platform adoption: MCP integration includes ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Visual Studio Code, and other major AI products
  • Infrastructure support: Enterprise deployment support is available through AWS, Cloudflare, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure

Recent Developments

Anthropic continues expanding MCP capabilities:

  • Claude offers a directory with over 75 connectors powered by MCP
  • Tool Search and Programmatic Tool Calling features have been introduced to optimize large-scale deployments
  • An official community-driven Registry enables MCP server discovery
  • Recent specification updates introduced asynchronous operations, statelessness, server identity, and official extensions
  • Official SDKs for major programming languages achieve 97M+ monthly downloads across Python and TypeScript

The Linux Foundation and AAIF

The Linux Foundation is a non-profit stewarding critical open-source projects including Linux Kernel, Kubernetes, Node.js, and PyTorch. The organization has demonstrated expertise in "facilitating open collaboration and maintaining vendor neutrality."

The Agentic AI Foundation operates as a directed fund under the Linux Foundation, co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, with support from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare, and Bloomberg. Its mission focuses on transparent, collaborative evolution of agentic AI through strategic investment, community building, and open standards development.

The Donation

MCP joins "goose" (by Block) and "AGENTS.md" (by OpenAI) as founding projects under the AAIF. The governance model remains unchanged, with maintainers continuing to prioritize community input and transparent decision-making.

Future Direction

Anthropic views open-source software as essential for secure, innovative agentic AI ecosystems. The organization remains committed to contributing to MCP and related agentic AI initiatives through the AAIF framework.
